collect things over time that may look nice, but does it belong there? From a
distance, does it look cluttered? An important lesson to learn before even
starting, is that there is true value in simplicity and empty spaces. The
farther apart good pieces are from each other the easier it will become for the
viewer to appreciate living areas as a whole.</div>

When rearranging your home, each room should be inspected and truthfully answer: is it time to downsize my
décor? This is always easier said then done. Sentiment to personal things can
be a downfall or a blessing when it comes to decorating. It just depends on how
well that lamp shade from Great Aunt Nena fits into the overall design or not.
Of course, we aren’t saying things should be 6 ft. apart! (too soon?) But,
since you have some free time during quarantine we would like you to go around
your house and to really give thought to each and every item you may or may not
hold dear and question if it really belongs there or somewhere else?</div>

possibility of what your home could look like if you did something different.
It doesn’t have to be as crazy as a complete renovation, but imagine what your bathroom
would look like with tile instead of wood floors? Granite instead of marble? A
dark midnight grey instead of white? Two light fixtures instead of one? Don’t
limit yourself to just the inside. Look at your backyard and even your front
yard. What if this summer you made space for a pool and swing set for your
kids? Take out some paper and a pencil. Walk around your whole property and
start doodling. Every great idea must start from somewhere, and why not now?
Imagine a tomato garden on the side of the house. See yourself walking on a
cobblestone pathway. Budget accordingly but never be afraid to improve

aesthetic isn’t disturbed, you can keep shopping. The small things matter just
as much as the large things. If you don’t think you can buy that expensive rug
for the bathroom, don’t worry. There are plenty of other options available that
will bring just as much charm and finesse. Remember: simplicity is key.
Consider how lighting a few candles or replacing a few hand towels can make all
the difference from plain to engaging. Some questions one should ask themselves
are; what would others take away from my overall theme that I’m presenting? How
can I bring about the highest value of comfort that is affordable? And do I
really need this? This is why we say research, research, research. Yes, it
takes time, but the outcome will leave you with a home like no other. <o:p></o:p></div>

A Modern Farmhouse style showcase model home in Artesian Hills and a brand-new coastal estate in Carlsbad made their debut this past weekend from San Diego Builder, MDD Homes. The result? A combination of the two open houses garnered an 800-person turnout. The showcase model home, however, was the main event, complete with an in-house culinary artist preparing light hor d’oeurves and bite-sized desserts for people to enjoy as they strolled through the sprawling estate.<br />

A common theme noted over the weekend was about this unique characteristic, “I love the openness when you first walk in.” Others described how it applied to the family unit and recreation, “truly a house designed for spending time together and entertaining guests.”<br />

The excitement and enthusiasm from visitors pulsated throughout the walls of the home, as the whispers of what a possible future life on the 2.5-acre estate would look like carried through each room. The highest of compliments were conferred upon the MDD Interior Design Team, as their use of sophisticated finishes, contrasting colors, and luxurious textures boasted a visually appealing aesthetic. The immaculate kitchen sparkled, but just behind it all the hard work that went into making the event preparations could be seen. So we adapted and started building a number of one-story homes, which became our new M.O. And we noticed that when we held grand openings or open houses for our new homes, people walking through would comment something along the lines of: "It's so nice that it's one-story!" or "Thank goodness, no stairs!" and even the occasional "We are looking for a one-story home because our stairs have become too much of a hassle or don't match the needs of our family."<br />

Whether you are building or buying a home, you are going to take into consideration the number of levels you want. So lets run through a list of the great and not so great aspects about each option.<br />

<li>Lets point out the obvious: you don't have to haul your groceries, laundry, or the vacuum cleaner up an entire flight of stairs!! In general, maintenance is a BREEZE because everything is on the ground level.</li>
<li>They are safer and more accessible. If you have young kids, pets, are caring for aging parents, or have mobility issues stairs may pose a serious risk. A single story home allows for more scope and accessibility.</li>
<li>Quieter. Ever stayed in a hotel or lived in an apartment complex and you could hear EVERYTHING the people above you were doing? Well that is not a problem with a one-story home, live in peace and quiet!</li>

Cons:</b></div>

<li>They require more land, which means more money. Because you are building out and not up, a one-story home is going require a bigger footprint and more roofing, costing more money.</li>
<li>Less privacy. Unless you live in a gated community or super far away from your next door neighbor, then there is a possibility that your house has more visibility (especially if you're a fan of windows) compared to a two-story home</li>

<li>Privacy and security. Having two levels allows for more privacy as the second floor has less visibility from the street. The top floor of a home also not very accessible to a burglar or thief, so leave those windows open if you don't want to spend money on AC!</li>
<li>Reverse floor plans are COOL! Making pasta from your second floor kitchen while having a glass of wine and looking out at the amazing view you have sounds awesome! You can get really creative with two-story floor plans.</li>
<li>Promising scenery. If your home or lot is located in a beautiful area, a two-story home gives you the advantage of having the opportunity to maximize your views and add a patio or porch!</li>

<b>Cons:</b></div>

<li>Higher risk of accidents. I think everyone knows someone who has fallen down the stairs (maybe even you have yourself), so having stairs in the house means accidents will happen and you have to go out and buy things to prevent them, like child proofing gates</li>
<li>Science. Here is a fact of life: heat rises and cool air falls. With that being said, your home's heating and AC bill could possibly be through the roof (pun intended) compared to a one-story home when trying to keep your second floor cool and your first floor warm.</li>
<li>Space Eater. It is a known fact that stairs can take up 100 sqft. or more of your living space and be costly.</li>

Ultimately your decision on whether or not you want a one or two-story home is going to depend on family circumstances, personal taste, location, and/or the shape/size of the lot you have. Our contact at SubZero-Wolf (SZ-W) invited MDD to come and see their showroom in Costa Mesa and have lunch! We said "absolutely!" and took a little trip up there this past Friday. The showroom was breathtaking! Every mock kitchen display was something out of a chef's dream. We got a full tour of the place, allowing us to see all of SZ-W's latest <b>innovative products</b>, including the newest addition to their brand: the Cove Dishwasher. This dishwasher operates with near silence, ensures spotless dishes every time, and is adaptive to the dishes you wash the most.</div>

There is an art to designing homes like this because for multiple generations to live under one roof there needs to be two things: privacy and openness. This can be achieved by having an attached fully functional guest home, guest bedroom with guest living inside the home, or multiple bedrooms throughout the home (see floor-plan below). This layout allows families to still live close together but with some space between them. Another important aspect of these floor plans are the living spaces; the areas of the home where all the family members gather together to enjoy each others company. An open plan allows for seamless interaction. Private areas for those times you feel like you need to get away are also necessary, these rooms could be offices, game/flex rooms, private patios, or TV rooms. All these aspects combined create the perfect atmosphere for living in a multi-generational home, making it easy to manage conflicting lifestyles and merge different schedules.<br />
