More Pavers!

Our last entry on "how we build your dream home" was about driveways and pavers.  I couldn't pass up posting some beautiful pictures taken of a home finished a few months ago with exquisite paver stones used in the front, back and poolside!  Pavers add color, texture and add a touch of warmth no matter where you place them! We would love to build your dream home too!  For more information, visit us at http://www.mddhomes.com/ or call Lori at 858-431-9622!

How We Build Your Dream Home - Part 13

Let’s talk a little bit about driveways!  Yes, driveways - the welcoming path leading you to your beautiful dream home!   MDD knows that a driveway says a lot about the home and can act as a decorative function to the homes' exterior.  For that purpose, most of our homes use a combination of colored concrete flatwork and pavers.   Instead of the standard dull, grey concrete flatwork, concrete can come in a variety of colors and different finishes to bring pizzazz to the front of a home.   But it must be done right!  Maintaining the structural integrity of high quality concrete requires precisely mixing aggregates, prompt delivery to ensure proper curing, and accurate application techniques to achieve a durable finish.    Different methods will produce diverse finishes – usually smooth finish for indoors and textured finish for exterior areas.   Most of our homes have a driveway made of Del Sur colored concrete with broom finish and jointing. To add even more character an

Family Time

At this time of year we think a lot about families.  It is the season of family get-togethers, feasting, watching football and throwing parties.  At McCullough Design Development we are always thinking about families and the use of space in our homes.  One of our goals is to create a home with space that is actually used and lived in!  For that reason, most of our home designs have an entertainment-sized kitchen that overlooks a spacious family room and dining nook. These three areas are combined and integrated, perfect for spending time with family and friends! Nothing displays this area better than the home that has served as our Model for the past couple of years! A well-lit kitchen creates a welcoming atmosphere. The kitchen comes equipped with high-end appliances and plenty of counter space. You can have more than one cook in the kitchen with two sinks, two ovens and a six-burner stove top. The kitchen adjoins a comfortable family room with fireplace

As Fireproof as they come!

I love the fall, but in San Diego, we recognize it to be fire season.  In Del Sur we have already had our first fire scare!  Here at McCullough Design Development, we build quality custom homes in the most fireproof manner possible.  Here are some of the things we are doing to reduce the likelihood of one of our homes catching fire. Our roof tiles are usually made of concrete, which are Class A fire rated, meaning they are effective against severe fire test exposure, the most stringent rating available for exterior fire resistance. (Concrete roof tiles are long lasting, can sustain winds in excess of 125 miles per hour and have a class 3 hail resistance rating as well!) Our eaves (the lower edges of the roof that project beyond the walls) are made of solid stucco and there is no wood trim on the exterior of our homes to easily ignite.  Our homes are built "slab on grade" meaning the foundation of concrete slab is set into the ground leaving no space between the grou

How We Build Your Dream Home - Part 12

Last month we installed beautiful wood floors!  This month we will discuss granite slab countertops and backsplashes! Polished natural stone slab, usually granite or other igneous rock with large crystals, is a popular choice for kitchen countertops due to its high durability and aesthetic qualities. In most of our homes, all of the countertops are made of owner selected class 1 & 2 granite slabs with double bullnose edges.  The granite slab is shaped using cutting and finishing equipment in the shop of the fabricator. The edges are commonly put on by hand-held routers, grinders, or CNC equipment. The client can choose from a stockyard of slabs before the material is surface polished and edged.   Because our countertops are of natural stone, each is unique, often with highly variegated patterns to add quality and character to the home.   The countertop assembly is installed on the job site by a professional crew. This series of pictures shows different options of granite colors
