MDD's Answers to Current Home Trends

I recently read an article that mentioned that the largest American generation is quickly nearing retirement age.  Although they may be getting older, they are not ready to head to a retirement home, but are an active generation that is driving the housing market toward a sophisticated style and the need for options and choices in their homes.  Here are some of the things they are looking for and what McCullough Design Development is doing about it.

Home Offices - Often working past the age of 65 they want a home office for a second career or part-time employment.  MDD often incorporates offices into their floorplans and has built some beautiful offices for clients with high quality built-in shelving.

Tech/Media Centers - Being tech-savvy, they are looking for top-of-the-line amenities such as a media room with surround sound and central control systems.  MDD has built game rooms perfect for video gaming, built-in projectors, surround sound and even stadium seating.

Wide Doorways and Hallways - As a person ages, there is a likelihood that the use of a wheelchair or a rascal might become a necessity. Designing a home that is livable now but can transition and be functional as the occupant ages is important.  At MDD most of our standard bedroom doors are 3' wide with 2' 6" doors to the closets and bathrooms, but with our custom program, we can design a home with wider doorways and halls as requested.

Better Lighting/Bigger Windows - The need for more lighting increases as we grow older.  One of the greatest features in the MDD homes are the French sliding or lift-and-slide doors in the family room that open to an outdoor veranda room and bring in a lot of light.  Often home owners also request increased canned lighting along with our window pop-outs and solatubes which add natural lighting.

First-Floor Bedrooms and Bathrooms - An increasing number of homes have a master suite downstairs so that there is less need to climb up and down stairs.  MDD mainly builds single story homes, with a spacious master bedroom, master bath and walk-in closet, and with secondary bedroom suites large enough for king-size bedroom sets, their own bathroom, and a walk-in closet.

"Flex" Space - These are rooms that take on the purpose of the present home owner's needs but can adjust with changes as they occur, allowing home owners to stay in their homes longer as it contiues to serve their needs throughout life's stages.  MDD builds custom homes according to their client's needs with spacious rooms and quality amenities so that the homes will last a long time.  A room built for a bedroom now could easily transition into an exercise room or office in the future.

  1. You are right, Home office is going to be new trend for homes and people will now consider to set up a productive office in their homes. Nailing that efficient and comfortable home office design is so important, especially at the moment with so many of us working from home a lot more. While designing a home office one must remember the purpose of a home office and buy Office Furniture in spite of simple lawn chair and ordinary desk. If you’ll be working in there on a daily basis, creating a different feel from the rest of your rooms may help you to focus, while a room that's a part home office, part homework study, part home admin center might look better decorated to match the rest of your home. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful post.
