Multigenerational Living - The Old New Trend

Yes, it really is making a comeback!

During the 1940's about 1/4th of the worlds population lived in a home with three or more generations present, and now we have seen an increase in this trend over the past few years.

In the industry of custom homes architects are finding that multi-generational living is on the rise and not slowing down! "In fact, for the first time in 130 years, living with parents surpasses other living arrangements for those 18 to 34" (Multigenerational Living is Back and it's a Good Thing). Whether the situation is kids returning home, parents moving in, adding roommates, or putting up guests, having that extra space is nice and useful. There are benefits in it for everyone: it makes it easier to care for aging parents, children are able to build relationships with older members of the family, and it saves money for all involved.

Rancho Valencia
There is an art to designing homes like this because for multiple generations to live under one roof there needs to be two things: privacy and openness. This can be achieved by having an attached fully functional guest home, guest bedroom with guest living inside the home, or multiple bedrooms throughout the home (see floor-plan below). This layout allows families to still live close together but with some space between them. Another important aspect of these floor plans are the living spaces; the areas of the home where all the family members gather together to enjoy each others company. An open plan allows for seamless interaction. Private areas for those times you feel like you need to get away are also necessary, these rooms could be offices, game/flex rooms, private patios, or TV rooms. All these aspects combined create the perfect atmosphere for living in a multi-generational home, making it easy to manage conflicting lifestyles and merge different schedules.

McCullough Design has picked up on this trend and designed various floorplans to accommodate living situations of all kinds! Right now we have a ready-to-move-in home in Point Loma with an attached guest bedroom. Our lot in Rancho Valencia (above) has plans for a guest bedroom and living area inside the home!
