Makeover During Quarantine?

How’s it going SoCal? Here at MDD we know all too well that you are done being stuck at home and looking for something productive. Well, stop lounging around the house aimlessly because we have the answer for you! Now more than ever is the perfect time to bring the place where you live closer to being called “home.” There are some things one must know before jumping into the art of decorating, which believe us is no easy task. Here are some ideas that might help you and your family out:

•        REORGANIZE

Just because there is space for something, doesn’t mean it belongs there. Look at your kitchen counter top or your office desk and think about the number of items that are put there. It is only natural for people to collect things over time that may look nice, but does it belong there? From a distance, does it look cluttered? An important lesson to learn before even starting, is that there is true value in simplicity and empty spaces. The farther apart good pieces are from each other the easier it will become for the viewer to appreciate living areas as a whole.

When rearranging your home, each room should be inspected and truthfully answer: is it time to downsize my décor? This is always easier said then done. Sentiment to personal things can be a downfall or a blessing when it comes to decorating. It just depends on how well that lamp shade from Great Aunt Nena fits into the overall design or not. Of course, we aren’t saying things should be 6 ft. apart! (too soon?) But, since you have some free time during quarantine we would like you to go around your house and to really give thought to each and every item you may or may not hold dear and question if it really belongs there or somewhere else?

• REDESIGN

This is a fun one! Don’t become scared into entering the possibility of what your home could look like if you did something different. It doesn’t have to be as crazy as a complete renovation, but imagine what your bathroom would look like with tile instead of wood floors? Granite instead of marble? A dark midnight grey instead of white? Two light fixtures instead of one? Don’t limit yourself to just the inside. Look at your backyard and even your front yard. What if this summer you made space for a pool and swing set for your kids? Take out some paper and a pencil. Walk around your whole property and start doodling. Every great idea must start from somewhere, and why not now? Imagine a tomato garden on the side of the house. See yourself walking on a cobblestone pathway. Budget accordingly but never be afraid to improve if it’s in your grasp. 

•        RESEARCH

It is time. Go on pintrest. Etsy. Houzz. Right now.

Yes, it is going to take a while to scroll through page after page to find what you are looking for. But there is no greater joy than receiving that package from Amazon that will make all the difference for that bay window with a new lounge seat, or a beautiful pillow set for the guest bedroom. There is nothing wrong with adding on to a room’s setting, if the comfortable aesthetic isn’t disturbed, you can keep shopping. The small things matter just as much as the large things. If you don’t think you can buy that expensive rug for the bathroom, don’t worry. There are plenty of other options available that will bring just as much charm and finesse. Remember: simplicity is key. Consider how lighting a few candles or replacing a few hand towels can make all the difference from plain to engaging. Some questions one should ask themselves are; what would others take away from my overall theme that I’m presenting? How can I bring about the highest value of comfort that is affordable? And do I really need this? This is why we say research, research, research. Yes, it takes time, but the outcome will leave you with a home like no other.

Now more than ever during quarantine, use this opportunity as a chance to re-imagine and recreate the way you live. Once life gets back to normal, it will be a great way to invite friends and family over again to come and admire the new and improved look that you’re so proud to call “home”.
