How We Build Your Dream Home - Part 2

Continuing on how we actually build a home...
Step 2 – Pour Foundation & Framing

Pouring of the foundation and framing are two of the coolest things to see done!
After the plumbing and electrical conduit is in place, the concrete guys then back fill the trenches.  A layer of compacted and decomposed granite is laid, followed by a moisture barrier (usually a thick sheet of plastic between the concrete and the granite) before the concrete slab is poured.  Embedded in the concrete is some wire mesh and steel reinforcing bars.  This allows the foundation to “float” on the soil, with deeper concrete around the edge holding it in place.

The concrete is then sawcut to prevent cracking and to maintain the quality of the concrete for years to come.

The first steps in framing a home are snapping, plating and detailing.  Snapping is laying out the floor plan on the concrete slab using a chalk line according to the blueprints.  We use 2x6 wood beams treated against fire and termites.
Lines have been snapped and lumber delivered.
A plate is the bottom and top horizontal wood beams to which the wall studs (vertical beams) are nailed.  When the beams have been cut, drilled and put in place, the details (doors, windows, posts and other measurements) are transferred from the plans to the plates (detailing).

Plating and detailing the house frame.
After the plating and detailing, framers stand the walls.

Standing walls

Once the walls are standing, they are plumbed and lined, meaning the walls are temporarily braced and sighted to make sure the long walls are straight (true and level on a vertical plane).
Walls have been plumbed and lined.
