McCullough Design: Building the New Single-Story Home

As San Diego comes out of these challenging economic times, we find ourselves analyzing every financial decision with a more discerning eye, and when investing in the future there is no place like a single story home.

“I talk to folks all the time who just cannot find the single story floorplan they are looking for, even in this market of good deals,” says Monty McCullough, lead designer of McCullough Design Development (MDD). This company gives the market what it is looking for, a smaller single story estate home with the same high quality and high-end amenities that are found in larger estate homes, but designed more efficiently around the rooms we live in everyday. Their pricing compares to short-sales and foreclosures seen in the market, yet delivers the floorplan that people need.

Visiting their model home at Gables Crossing in Del Sur, you will get a flavor of what they build. They focus on entertainment sized kitchens, the place where everything happens. This includes big granite-top islands, oversized pantries and an abundance of furniture grade cabinets, truly a cook’s dream. Kitchens overlook large café nooks and open-beam family rooms with built-in television cabinets and fireplaces. All three rooms are open and integrated with each other. New home buyers are trading in formal areas for covered outdoor living rooms with fireplaces and televisions; and outdoor kitchens. These outdoor areas connect to the kitchen/nook/family room through French doors or disappearing sliding doors, bringing the outside in. Secondary bedrooms are large enough for queen size bedroom sets, having their own private baths and walk-in closets. The master bedroom includes enormous walk-in closets and doorless showers. Large bonus/game rooms connected to the family room are ideal for any form of entertainment, such as video games, theater room or just watching TV by yourself.

How They Design
MDD is a design/build company that distinguish themselves from other architects and builders. “Our ability to deliver customized floorplans that meet our client’s lifestyle and pocketbook is the ‘DNA’ of our company,” explains Wes Nelson, one of MDD’s designers. Having three full-time designers who get constant feedback from their subcontractors, material suppliers, and superintendents assists them to get the latest information on schedules, pricing, and amenities which allow them to answer their client’s two biggest questions – time and money. This makes it an enjoyable experience for the clients, taking about 1 year from the first meeting to move in. Talking to previous clients, MDD nails their schedule and budget, it’s no wonder this company is busy!

How It Works
MDD custom designs floorplans tailor suited to their individual lots, displayed on high-quality brochures that include the construction costs to build that home on that lot. (Most of their homes are 4,000-6,000 sq. ft. being built for approximately $185-215/sq. ft. depending on the lot, home size and location.) They also build in other areas, as they are currently building homes in Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Poway and so on.

This marketing program is also available to current land owners, matching lot sellers with MDD buyers looking to build these exciting new floorplans. They are teamed up with the dynamic Brokerage of Real Living Lifestyles, truly making MDD an “all-in-one” company from designing and building through sales. Visit their website at www.mddhomes.com to take a personal virtual tour of their newly completed homes, meet the MDD team, and go through the step-by-step building process on their blog.
