McCullough streamlines home building process

McCullough Design Development has been building homes for six years, and prior to that under the name McCullough Ames Development. “I’ve been building homes in Poway and North San Diego County for 25 years,” said company president Monty McCullough.

McCullough and his team work a little differently than many other home building companies, due to the fact that all architecture, construction and real estate is handled in-house. “We’re really a turn-key company,” said McCullough. “It makes us unique to everyone else, and installs confidence in our clients. We do both the design and the building, so it really streamlines the process, and saves our clients time and money.”

One of the ways McCullough Design Development installs confidence in its clients is with its “5 percent price,” which allows them to give their clients a final price within 5 percent accuracy when they’re planning out the building of the home. “One of the first things people ask is, ‘How much is it going to cost to build my home?’” said McCullough. “We spend about two hours with them, finding out what they want in their homes, and from there, can give them a 5 percent price.”

The company also keeps a 5,500-square-foot model home in one of their developments, Gables Crossing, in Del Sur, which potential clients can tour and see not only what McCullough Design Development can do, but some of their options for their own home. “[Clients] can walk the showcase home and can see what they’re getting for the price,” said McCullough. “It really takes a lot of mystery out of [the design and building process]. The model home helps answer 98 percent of client questions.”

McCullough Design Development builds and designs both communities, such as Gables Crossing, and custom homes. “We do about 10 to 15 custom homes a year,” said McCullough, “and I do about five to 10 speculative homes a year as well.” As a design build firm, McCullough Design Development can do sketches, and can marry the preliminary design and the cost.

McCullough said that he and his team are “on the cutting edge of design” in their homes. “We’ve just about eliminated the living and dining rooms [in our home plans], because nobody uses them anymore,” said McCullough, though he added that if you want, those rooms can be added back into your home design. “Now we have outdoor covered verandas, for an outdoor living room and outdoor dining. They connect [to the inside] with disappearing French doors. [That design] is much more popular with our clientele than traditional living and dining rooms.”

McCullough comes to home design and building through his family. “My dad was a builder, and all my brothers are contractors,” said McCullough. “I was an architect first, and went on my own in 1986, designing and building homes in Poway, then branching out [to North San Diego County].” McCullough has lived in Poway for the past 15 years in a home in one of his own developments.
